Creating a Google Map

We often create Google Maps and use layers to track sightings and sign placement. Maps are not required because there will be many times where you  we know the location of the dog and its a quick handcatch or trap.  In other instances, we have so many signs and sightings that go on for weeks that the maps are invaluable!

Do's and Don'ts

  • Do not post a link to the map on Social Media if it contains sightings
  • Do not give too many people access to edit and even then, only if they know what they are doing. You'll probably find it easier to have the family or people putting up signs just let you know where the signs and flyers were placed.

Step-by-Step

  • Go to Google > My Maps
  • Click on "Create New Map"
  • Start with POF (Point of Flight) as your first pin (Black star is commonly used)
  • Add a layer for "Signs" and a layer for "Sightings" (Color coding by day is helpful!)

Who can help?

  • We have some team members who are experts at making and managing signs! (Should we add names here??)

Tips:

  • It is helpful in winter to add more detail about sign location in case we have to dig them up in the snow! (i.e. NE Corner)
  • Never pull -all- signs from the POF area even if the dog is spotted farther away.
