Ground Searches, Drones, Bonded Dogs

Ground Searches

  • If the dog is trailing a leash or injured - we do search. We want to be the voice leading the search whenever possible. A coordinated ground search with people assigned to certain streets/areas/etc. is best so you can keep track of what areas have been. (** Add Den file info here??)
  • If the dog is running loose, we DO NOT search and we discourage the family/rescue from doing so. When the dog is already scared and running from people, adding more people will scare them and cause them to run further or make bad decisions such as running into traffic, onto thin ice, bodies of water or railroad track. We need to keep the area quiet so the dog can settle down.
  • However, if the dog is running in a high traffic area such as a highway-  DO respond to get the dog off the roadway, but then let him/her go and leave food  nearby in a safe area with scent. Do not continue to follow the dog once the immediate danger has passed. Continue with awareness and food/scent at home and near sightings.

Bonded Dogs

  • If there is a bonded dog, or even a sibling or fellow foster dog they likes we DO want the family to walk in the area of sightings with them. If possible, get them to go potty and leave their scent.

Other methods people may ask about:

  • Drones - We do NOT advise using drones unless the dog is trailing a leash or injured. In most cases, all they do is scare a dog.
  • Tranquilizer Guns - add info
  • Drugs - add what to use and how, or what to avoid
  • Collerum? Snappy Snare, Nets
  • Anything else?
